Which college degrees give you the best chances of finding employment after graduation? Some students select a major because it may be valuable in the workplace. Other students choose their major simply because they enjoy the subject. As the Heritage University admissions office has to analyze many applications, your goal is to stand out in a good way. Keep your admissions application brief, and stick to the point when answering questions. Admissions application dates vary, so check with a guidance counselor for certificate programs, night classes, and required forms. You should apply to several schools as back-up choices, as well as more competitive colleges. Entrance test dates may be posted on the student services website regarding degree programs.

Depending on the schools you're applying to, the admissions process can range from a formula that weighs grades and test scores, to a subjective review of your application. The most popular college major is business administration, split evenly between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, the fields of education, English and liberal arts dominate the list. If you choose, online education gives you the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript. Alternatively, you may be able to complete online credits for a grade. Distance education may supplant high-priced course textbooks, as many books are now published digitally on Kindle, Google Books, or as shareware.

Online Courses - MOOCs

Heritage University night classes
The best college for a student isn't necessarily the highest-ranking school in the Forbes or US News listings, but rather the college that offers their students the best career chances. If you remain true to your career interests, not just going after salary, your overall job earnings will increase as you gain experience. However, if your focus is more on salary alone, there's a higher risk that you'll suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers later on.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year university, and you can earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. By taking some of your required degree courses online, you may be able to graduate a semester early, thus saving money on tuition. If you're currently employed, you can take online courses in your free time to advance your career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing cloud-based software, interactive platforms such as Blackboard, and mobile apps. Udemy is a startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Similarly, Khan Academy now offers free lecture videos served through YouTube. Then there's Coursera, a competing software platform, with millions of enrolled students from around the world. Finally, MIT announced that their open courseware platform (OCW) will be available at no cost.

This section offers practice tests in several subject areas. Each of the following multiple-choice tests has 10 questions to work on. No sign-up required, just straight to the test.

Admissions Process

Most colleges accept either the SAT or ACT, and have formulas for converting raw test scores. Colleges use these standardized tests because there are substantial differences in curricula, grading, and difficulty among US high schools. ACT test questions are geared towards higher levels of high school mathematics, while the SAT test is a better choice for students with an excellent vocabulary. On average, over half of students retaking the SAT saw improvements in their scores. Further, Advanced Placement exams are offered in a variety of physical sciences, offering you college credit for honors-level classes that you have taken while still in high school. Test yourself with practice exams online, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests.

Public universities are more likely to evaluate applicants based on grades and test scores alone, while private universities tend to be more holistic. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice. An ideal academic record is one of increasingly better grades, in courses of progressive difficulty. About half of colleges use a waiting list, and many community colleges have agreements with four-year universities, so that the transfer of credits is ensured.

Financial Aid Information

Government scholarships and grants, combined with private scholarships, only account for a third of total college aid. Loans, earnings, and savings make up the remaining two-thirds. It costs nothing to apply for financial aid, so just do it. In fact, millions of students that would have qualified for some financial aid were late in submitting required forms, so they were passed over. The official FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov and is free. Merit-based aid is a package of scholarships and grants awarded to students with special talents.

Academic scholarships are highly competitive, and are usually awarded either by the admissions office, or individual academic departments. Most private loan programs are tied to one or more financial indexes, such as the BBA LIBOR Rate, plus an overhead charge. Because private loans are based on the credit history of the applicant, the overhead charge may vary. Federal Direct Student Loans, also known as Direct Loans, are funded by the US Treasury. Alternatively, student credit cards may seem like a good short-term solution, but the interest rates are high, and credit cards often carry an annual fee. You can get a credit report online by submitting a credit card application, whether you are approved or not. Peterson's scholarship search is good to check not only for college scholarships, but also for the extensive resources on the college application process. Trade unions may offer scholarships for union members and their dependent children.

Learn about nationally-accredited, technical training programs. You can train in as little as 1 year to advance in a high-paying, professional field. Manufacturing facilities around the world are increasing adoption of industrial robots to increase productivity and maintain competitiveness. In both the US and China particularly, application of industrial robots is on the rise. Industrial robots are used in factories and warehouses for material handling and heavy manufacturing operations such as welding, cutting, and assembly. As robots increasingly must co-exist with human workers areas, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) studies warn that most robot accidents occur during non-routine operating conditions, such as programming, maintenance, testing, setup, or adjustment. During many of these operations the worker may temporarily be within the robot's working envelope, where unintended operations could result in injuries.

US sales of industrial robots grew by 66 percent in the past 5 years alone, according to the International Federation of Robots. During this period, US sales increased at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of almost 14 percent, despite a decline during the recent recession. The Robotic Industries Association (RIA) reported that the world market for industrial robots is driven primarily by demand from motor vehicle manufacturing, followed by the electronics industry. The major foreign-owned industrial robot producers with US factories are from Japan (Fanuc, Kawasaki, Yaskawa-Motoman), Germany (Kuka), and Switzerland (ABB and Staubli). US manufacturers that design and produce industrial robots include Adept Technology, Genmark Automation, Rethink Robotics, and SAGE Automation. In addition to automotive robots, these companies produce robots for the electronics, medical, and logistics industries.
